Pre-CHL Course

Course Description

Designed for those who do not own a firearm, or don’t know much about the one they own, and have had little practical training. This course starts at the most basic level to build solid proficiency, fundamental reflexes, firearms safety, and mental awareness through extensive scenario-based experiences.

What You Will Learn

You will learn principles of non-verbal communication, conflict resolution, verbal de-escalation, situation awareness, gun safety at home, how to carry a gun safely and unobtrusively. You will become familiar with carrying, operating, cleaning, and safely storing a handgun. You will be taught the proper way to conduct dry-fire and live-fire practice. Any children living or habitually staying in your home will attend a children’s gun safety class.

Course Structure

Pre-CHL training is a quarterly program, taking three months (one quarter) to complete. Sessions are every other week and each session is three hours in duration. The instructor/student ratio is 1:4 or better (1:1 while shooting).

  • Situation Awareness and the Defense Mindset
  • Drug Awareness and Impact – effects on others, warning signs/recognition
  • Gun Safety (Four Rules)
  • Gun Maintenance
  • Ammunition Safety and Handling
  • Dry-Fire Practice – shoot, reload, draw, safety
  • Basic Shooting Stance – natural point of aim
  • Drawing from Concealment
    Use of Cover, Lateral Movement
  • Physiology of a Defensive Incident (tachypsychia, auditory exclusion, etc.)
  • Practical Concealed Carry
  • After a Defensive Incident (legal, psychological, and social issues)
